Social Work
The delegated social work team has remained steadfast in providing services to our Gitxsan Nation, addressing the unique challenges faced by rural First Nation communities. Adapting to shifting circumstances and provincial legislation, the team extended their outreach by delivering essential supports, including food hampers and care kits, to children, youth, and families across the nation’s five villages.
The challenges in our rural community have deeply impacted Gitxsan traditions and well-being. With the loss of lives and the disruption of feasts, ceremonies, and gatherings, opportunities for the natural transmission of culture, traditional knowledge, and laws were interrupted. These cultural practices are vital for strengthening families and fostering resilience, especially for children and youth.
Recognizing the critical role of social work in restoring and strengthening community connections, GCFSS’s initiatives emphasize expanding localized support systems. Community-based social work hubs are being established to deliver wraparound services rooted in Gitxsan holistic wellness principles. These hubs aim to bridge gaps in access, provide culturally informed care, and address the unique needs of rural First Nation communities. The plan also includes hiring additional team leaders and social workers to ensure more responsive and effective service delivery throughout the Gitxsan villages.
